When Should I Get Tested?

If you have symptoms or a concern, it is usually best to test as soon as possible. If you are testing after an exposure without symptoms, timing can vary by infection; your nurse will guide you on the best window.

  • If you have symptoms: book as soon as possible
  • After a recent exposure: ask about the best timing for each test
  • Routine screening: consider testing with new or multiple partners
  • If you need results for an upcoming appointment: book early when possible

Available tests

Learn more about common infections and similar conditions your nurse may discuss based on your symptoms, exposure and testing goals.

Gonorrhea+

A common bacterial infection that can affect the genitals, throat, or rectum. Most people have no symptoms, which is why testing is the only reliable way to know. It spreads through unprotected sexual contact and is fully curable with antibiotics.

Urine sample and/or swab

Chlamydia+

The most frequently reported bacterial STI, and most people who have it do not have any symptoms. It spreads through unprotected vaginal, anal, or oral sex. A simple urine test or swab confirms it, and it clears up quickly with antibiotics.

Urine sample and/or swab

Trichomonas+

The most common curable STI worldwide. Most people, especially men, have no symptoms. It is fully treatable with a single course of antibiotics.

Urine sample and/or swab

HIV+

HIV affects the immune system and is often symptom-free for years. Knowing your status is one of the most important steps you can take for your health, and with today's treatments, people living with HIV live long, full lives.

Blood sample

Syphilis+

A bacterial infection that progresses quietly through stages, often with no obvious symptoms. Caught early, it is treatable with antibiotics, which is why testing sooner rather than later makes a real difference.

Blood sample

Hepatitis B+

A viral liver infection spread through blood and sexual contact, including unprotected sex and shared needles. Most adults clear it naturally, but a blood test tells you where you stand. A vaccine is also available for those who have not yet been vaccinated.

Blood sample

Hepatitis C+

A liver infection primarily spread through blood contact, such as shared needles or unsterilized equipment. It is often symptom-free for years, but modern treatments cure it in over 95% of cases.

Blood sample

Mycoplasma+

A lesser-known but increasingly common bacterial infection that rarely causes noticeable symptoms. It is not always included in standard STI panels, so it is worth requesting specifically after unprotected sex or if you have unusual discharge or discomfort.

Urine sample and/or swab

Herpes (HSV-1 & HSV-2)+

Far more common than most people realize, and very manageable. Testing is recommended when symptoms are present or after a known exposure, rather than as routine preventive screening.

Swab of active lesion or blood sample (IgG antibody test)

HPV+

The most common STI. Most sexually active people will be exposed at some point, and many strains clear on their own. A swab test screens for high-risk strains worth monitoring, and Gardasil is available for prevention. There is no blood test for HPV.

Cervical or anal swab

Urinary Tract Infection+

Not a sexually transmitted infection, but urinary tract infections can cause symptoms very similar to STIs: burning, urgency, frequent urination or pelvic discomfort. A urine culture identifies whether bacteria are present and which antibiotic may work best.

Urine sample

Vaginosis and Yeast Infection+

Not a sexually transmitted infection, but bacterial vaginosis and yeast infections can cause discharge, odor and irritation that look and feel like an STI. A vaginal swab identifies what is going on so treatment targets the real cause.
